Arkwright Bridge Will Close, Ending 123-years of Service

The 123-year-old span will close for good tomorrow.

The state Department of Transportation announced today that the locally-owned Arkwright Bridge, which carries Hill Street over the Pawtuxet River across the Cranston/Coventry border, will be permanently closed tomorrow.

A recent RIDOT inspection determined the weight limit for the 123-year-old bridge should be reduced to less than 3 tons. As a result, the DOT recommended both municipalities close the structure.

The structurally deficient bridge used to carry a 5-ton limit. A detour route will be signed by the Town of Coventry.
