Garcia Appointed Library Director
Ed Garcia has been named new Library Director for the Cranston Public Library system. He previously served as Technology Coordinator for the libraries and has been steering the city's busy libraries into the digital age.
Ed Garcia knows a thing or two about technology. That's why he was appointed Technology Coordinator for the Cranston Public Library system last August.
At a time when many communities are watching their libraries downsize, close or seemingly fade away, Cranston's has the highest circulation in Rhode Island, with 1.1 million items being checked out in 2011.
And its not just books that are flying out the door. eBooks, music and movies are streaming into the hands of Cranston residents every day thanks in part to Garcia's efforts expanding the library system's digital offerings and classes that help teach readers how to use their iPads, Nooks, Kindles and other devices to take advantage of the thousands of digital titles that are available.
So it makes sense that the Cranston Library Board of Trustees has appointed Garcia to the position of Library Director.
"We are extremely pleased that Mr. Edward Garcia has accepted the position of Director. In addition to Mr. Garcia's wealth of public library and related managerial experience, Mr. Garcia brings an unparalleled enthusiasm for and knowledge of current technologies which are necessary to keep the Library relevant for all age groups and for years to come," said Nancy Davis, chairwoman of the board. "The Board looks forward to working with Mr. Garcia and stands ready to support his success as Library Director."
Garcia joined the Cranston Library in 2006 as an intern. He served as Assistant Director of the Central Falls Free Public Library for a brief time before returning to Cranston to be its Information Access Librarian in 2008. He was appointed Technology Coordinator in 2011.
Garcia is a graduate of the University of Rhode Island where he got his bachelor's and master's degrees.
The American Library Association named him an "Emerging Leader" and "2010 Library Journal Mover and Shaker" recently.
Garcia has been a Cranston resident since 2001.
Garcia takes over for David Macksam, who retired.
