Studio B Event Tonight Will Help Families with Prom Costs

Studio B in Garden City Center is the place to be tonight. From 6 to 8 p.m. the salon is hosting "the Perfect Prom" to help local families cover increasing prom costs. It is also collecting gently used dresses for girls that can't afford them.

For many families on tight budgets, prom season can be as much a financial strain for parents as a rite of passage for high school students.

Two alums of the city's public school system are doing something to make it a little easier for some of those families: Kristi and Steve Beaman, owners of Studio B in .

From 6 to 8 p.m. tonight, Studio B is hosting a charity event to raise money for families who cannot afford the increasing cost of the prom. Tickets are $25 and all proceeds will go to both Cranston High School East and West. They call it "the Perfect Prom Event."

"My husband and I are both Cranston High School West alumni and we want to help support the community that also supports us as a locally owned small business." Kristi Beaman said.

Tickets can be purchased at Studio B or by visiting http://theperfectpromevent.eventbrite.com/. You can also call 401-437-8688.

According to Beaman, “This year's top hair trends include long waves pinned back, fishtails and other unique braids, soft buns and unique headbands. The days of polished and tight, shellacked updos are long gone. Now it’s all about a softer, prettier look. Celebs like Lauren Conrad, Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez are always great inspirations. And, makeup this year is all about the classic smoky eye look paired with a nude lip and bronzed skin. Another big trend this year is a bright pink lip paired with a black eye liner (think Adele's famous "cat eye" look) and lots of mascara, maybe even some false lashes to amplify the look!”

And while young men may not be interested in hair and make-up, they do need a tuxedo and Garden City Center has tuxedos. The traditional black tuxedo remains a staple this year, according to Steven Ferrara, manager of Jos. A. Banks, a men’s clothier that rents tuxedoes starting at $69.00. “We are mostly renting black tuxedoes for prom, but the vest and tie are all about the girl’s dress. It usually depends on what the girl wants.”
