Vacant House Erupts in Flames

Firefighters extinguished the fire early this morning.

Firefighters battled a fast-moving fire at a vacant home at the intersections of Garden, Arthur and Hodsell Streets early this morning.

The call for the fire came in around 4 a.m. and crews had the fire knocked down about 15 minutes later.

Dep. Chief Herb Bassett of the Cranston Fire Department said the fire appears to have started on the left side of the house and quickly moved up the floors.

The three-family, three-story house was still smoldering as of 5:45 a.m. as crews worked to put down hot spots in the attic and roof.

The fire was intense for a time and crews had to be pulled from the house for a short time before they got the upper hand.

Multiple ladder trucks responded to the scene. Portions of Hodsell, Garden and Arthur Streets were blocked off for a time as police guarded the area.

Nobody was in the house when the fire started.
