The Las Vegas style show will bring a raucous time to the Park Theatre this Saturday.
You don't always have to go to Las Vegas to see exotic burlesque dancers, listen to Doo-Wop, barbershop quartets and hear music from the legends: James Brown, Elvis, Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner. Just head to the Park Theatre this Saturday night and Harvey Robbins, a producer who puts on shows in Las Vegas, Foxwoods Casino and other towns, will put out all the stops to make sure what happens in Cranston stays in Cranston this weekend. "It brings something for everyone—good fun, great music, dance, doo-wop, 1950s music, comedy and exotically beautiful burlesque dancers," Robbins said. Along for the ride is Tony Funches, former lead singer for Herb Reed's Platters, who will sing many of the Platters' hits like "My Prayer," "The Great …

Time is running out if you want to see Kevin Costner and his band, Modern West, at the Park Theatre tonight.
As of late last night, there were just about 40 tickets left for tonight's musical performance by Kevin Costner and Modern West at the Park Theatre. If you're planning on going, get on the phone, head down to the box office, or hit up the theatre's Web site right now. You might run out of time before the 8 p.m. performance. “We couldn’t be more excited about the Kevin Costner and Modern West show this weekend, and fully expect it to sell-out by Saturday,” said Piyush Patel, Owner of the Park Theatre. “What has made the concert even more appealing to the community is the fact that our tickets are priced so affordably – some 50 to 80 percent less than other venues around the country.” Costner is known around the world for his acting work, …

Volunteers helped the Artists' Exchange get some painting and much-needed de-cluttering accomplished yesterday thanks to the Community College of Rhode Island's annual Community Service Day.
Karen Bouchard, visual arts director at the Artists' Exchange, always loves when the volunteers come by. "They're doing the things we walk by all year and say 'we've got to do that, we've got to paint that,'" she said, gesturing towards a crew of volunteers from the Community College of Rhode Island busy clearing out a storage area. Another group of students and CCRI staff were putting the finishing touches on a bright paint job for one of the art studio's walls. It's the stuff Bouchard sees all year long and then, "one day, boom!" she said. "This is fantastic." About 170 volunteers from CCRI fanned out across the state yesterday. It was part of the college's fifth annual Community Service Day. The event started in 2007, when the college …

Grammy winner and famed fiddler Natalie MacMaster will be at the Park Theatre tonight. The show starts with a performance by Rhode Island's own The Kelly School of Irish Dance.
You might not be all that interested in Celtic fiddle music, but Grammy winner Natale MaMacster, who will be at the Park Theatre for one performance tonight, has a story that might change your mind. After a show, a woman who looked to be about 80-years-old came up to MacMaster and gave her a compliment she'd never forget. "She said, 'I don't like fiddle music, but I loved your show,'" MacMaster said in an interview. "When you can actually get someone to like the show, when they don't like the instrument you play, that's pretty cool." And a MacMaster show is revolves around her fiddle and her fingers flying over the fingerboard. "I took it as a high compliment," MacMaster said. "So anyone who might not be terribly interested in Celtic music…

One Cranston fifth grader is getting national attention for her pottery. Her art is included in a national exhibit at a national ceramics conference after she was picked out of thousands of submissions. Alison Carranza, 11, a student at Edward S. Did you go to the premier? What did you think? If you didn't see it — are you interested in what the former two-term mayor has been up to since he moved out of Rhode Island?
After leaving office, former Cranston Mayor Steve Laffey has been hard at work on a grassroots documentary entitled "Fixing America." He traveled across the country, putting on the journalist's hat to make the probing documentary that takes a hard look at the country's financial problems and the effect on everyday working people.
