Children donate over 600lbs of candy to the troops

The Children’s Workshop, a local childcare provider in Cranston, held the 4th Annual Candy Drive for Operation Gratitude. Operation Gratitude is a nonprofit organization that sends care packages to active military personnel serving overseas. The Children’s Workshop awards a free book to any child that donates his or her hard-earned Halloween candy.  Then they box it up, and ship the candy to Operation Gratitude.

This year, the children and members of the community donated over 600 lbs of candy! It was enough to fill 45 large priority flat rate boxes. The kids included letters, notes and drawings in each box for the troops. In the spirit of Thanksgiving, many of the children used the letters to express their gratefulness to the troops for protecting their country, and their freedom.

Maggie Teller, Director of Corporate Development at The Children’s Workshop explains, “We encouraged families to swap Halloween candy for a children’s book in the hopes of exchanging cavities and sugar induced hyperactivity for learning, literacy, and charitable giving.”
