Obituary of Alvaro T. Resende

Alvaro T. Resende, 79, of West Warwick, Rhode Island died Friday, August 23, 2013 at home with his family by his side.

He was born on June 25, 1934 in Rabo de Peixe, Sao Miguel, Azores before bringing his family to the Unites States in 1973. Alvaro was the beloved husband of Laura B. (Pimentel) Resende, his loving wife of 54 years.

Besides his wife, he leaves five sons and four daughters, Jose Resende and his wife Karola of Ft. Pierce, FL; Alvaro R. Resende of West Warwick, RI; Arthur Resende and his wife Hermina Resende of Danville, NH; Maria Shank and her husband Kregg Shank of West Greenwich, RI; Adriana Thompson and her husband Mark Thompson of West Warwick, RI; Gabriela Goldberg and her husband Allan Goldberg of Cranston, RI; Francisco J. Resende and his wife Roberta Resende of Cranston, RI; Richard Resende of Mystic, CT; and Patricia Medeiros and her husband David Medeiros of Attleboro, MA.

Alvaro leaves behind 29 loving grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

He was the son of the late Francisco Moniz Resende and the late Maria dos Anjos (Tavares) Resende-Ventura. He was the beloved brother to Maria Andrade, Jose B. Resende, Luis Resende and Gabriela Torres. He was the step-brother of Mary Barreto and Sylvia Andre, both of West Warwick, and the late Manuel, John, Joseph and Anthony Ventura.

Alvaro, who owned a barber shop in the Azores, left his life there behind in order to fulfill his dream of bringing his family to America. He celebrated the success of that dream recently with a 40-year anniversary celebration. Other than his family, Alvaro was passionate about two things, gardening and making his own wine.

Relatives and friends are invited to his funeral on Tuesday, August 27, 2013 at 9:00 am from THE PRATA-MURPHY FUNERAL HOME, 78 Providence Street, West Warwick, RI followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in St. Anthony's Church, 10 Sunset Avenue, West Warwick, RI. Visiting hours will be held on Monday, August 26 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home. Burial will be at Notre Dame Cemetery, Burlingame Road, West Warwick.
