"A good Samaritan brought her to Ocean State Vet and the family was able to comfort her during her last moments," the post stated. "RIP Lei Lu, you were much loved."

Lei Lu was adopted from the Warwick Animal Shelter six years ago and "was the closed thing to Lassie you could ever hope to have," her owner, Maria Tovar said.

Lei Lu was hit by a car on Centerville Avenue and brought to OSVS with neurological damage, chest contusions and bleeding in her abdomen, Tovar said.

"We had to put her to sleep," she said. "Our hearts are broken."

The family is thankful for the good Samaritan who brought Lei Lu to the vet.

"At least she didnt' die alone in the cold by the side of the road. We got to see her and say goodbye."

Lei Lu was found about a quarter-mile from where they were searching, Tovar said.
