The Temptations Show at the Park Theatre is Tempting

At just the mere mention of Motown Legends, The Temptations, music lovers across the globe are flooded with memories of some of the biggest hits in music history—which is to be expected from a group that’s released 31 Top-Ten Singles during an illustrious career. On Sunday, December 8, the group; widely considered one of the most successful and influential groups in music history, will perform at the historic Park Theatre in Cranston.

For more than forty years, The Temptations have prospered while propelling popular music with a series of smash hits and sold-out performances across the globe. Formed in 1960 in Detroit, Michigan under the name The Elgins, the group has sold tens of millions of records. The group changed its name to The Temptations in 1961 at the suggestion of the legendary Berry Gordy, the inventor of the original Motown machine, who signed the group to its first record deal that same year.

After beginning to work with Smokey Robinson as a producer and writer in 1963, The Temptations became a household name following the release of “The Way You Do the Things You Do”—immediately propelling the group to stardom. A landslide of hits soon followed, including timeless classics such as, “My Girl,” “It’s Growing,” “Since I Lost My Baby,” “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” “I Wish It Would Rain,” and dozens more.

Over the course of their incredible career, The Temptations have earned three Grammy Awards, including being the first Motown recording act to win a Grammy. In 2013, the group received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and three of their classic songs, “My Girl,” “Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me),” and “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone,” are among the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s List of Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. Six of The Temptations (Dennis Edwards, Melvin Franklin, Eddie Kendricks, David Ruffin, Otis Williams and Paul Williams) were inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989.

Though The Temptations lineup has changed over the years, the group continues to perform and record for Universal Music Group with its one living original member, Otis Williams, still in the lineup.
