CarMax Proposes Dealership at Former Building 19 Site

The old Building 19 would be demolished along with the nearby salon building to make way for a new CarMax dealership.

CarMax Superstores is proposing to develop the former Building 19 location on Bald Hill Road into a car dealership with sales and carwash facilities and about 600 parking spaces for customer parking and cars for sale.

The plan was to get a review by the city's Development Plan Review Committee on Feb. 5, but that meeting was delayed due to the snow storm. It has been rescheduled for Feb. 12 at 9 a.m. in council chambers at City Hall.

The project calls for demolishing the Building 19 and salon buildings and constructing a single story building with parking.

The sales building would be about 9,600 square feet, the service department would be 3,342 square feet and a small carwash facility rounds out the structures on the property. Of the 600 parking spaces, 200 would be for customer use. The rest would be to display cars for sale.

The 8.3 acre lot is designated C-4 Highway Business District and comprises 8.3 acres, of which 5.17 are in Cranston. 

What do you think of the proposal? Is a car dealership a good fit for the location? what would you like to see there?

Whats the insurance on that lot? Must be high, there is a potential for a lot full of submerged vehicles.

I'd rather see it become a dog park rather than another car lot. There is a reason no business can survive in that location. It starts with an M and ends with all

I agree. It would be nice to see more green space and a place for dogs to run free. Just wondering if it would be safe for a dog park. Too much fast moving traffic and dogs do jump fences.

Green spaces do not bring revenue into the city, I think a Carmax is a great idea if they can get the insurance since that lot was fully submerged a few years ago, although id still love to see a Sonic at that location

That lot is split between Cranston and Warwick so, the revenue is split anyways. Make 3/4 of the lot a dog park and put up a pet store and a Starbucks right next to one another. Cha Ching.

While they're at it, make bridge access (like a sky-walk) to and from the bike path.

I think the city could ask the developers for a gateway design or landscaping plan that welcomes people into Cranston. It's an opportunity to brighten an otherwise drab area. Does anyone agree?

I think landscaping would be a wonderful idea. That area is plain ugly, and has been for many years. Hopefully this company will not be given a considerable tax break. Both cities could use the tax dollars.

Clearly that area needs something to attract more revenue however until the government does their share we are all &*^%$

I can almost guarantee that a structural segmented wall will be constructed along the lower portion of Bald Hill Road, allowing the developers to raise the grade above the flood plain.

Doubt it. The surrounding businesses would have something to say about all the water that would be diverted to their property.
