RI Credit Union Eyes Old Bickfords Site for New Branch

The former Bickfords at 860 Reservoir Ave. has sat idle for years.
The former Bickfords at 860 Reservoir Ave. has sat idle for years.
Plans are underway to turn a Reservoir Avenue eyesore into a new credit union branch.

On Wednesday, the city's Development Plan Review Committee will pick up a proposal by RI Credit Union, Inc., to develop the site at 860 Reservoir Ave. into a branch credit union with a drive-thru.

The project proposes demolishing the old Bickford's restaurant building and replacing it with a 3,000 square foot building with "associate parking, drainage mitigation and landscaping."

The vacant site is about 34,724 square feet and zoned C-1 Commercial Zoning District.

We'll post more details soon.

Last summer, we asked Cranston Patch readers what they'd like to see at the location.

Ideas ranged from a park and ride, water park, dog park, CiCi's Pizza, Fresh City, to a Dave's Marketplace.

RICU going in there is fine. However, I hope they don't close the branch on Pontiac Avenue! Very convenient for me.

Jeez...and I was hoping for a medical marijuana dispensary, a 7/11 and a Police Substation....mmm very disappointed....The Cops could ticket all the cars parked illegally when the dope heads go into 7/11 for the snacks after doing up all their weed...

Just what Reservoir Ave and Cranston needs, another banking institution.......can you sense the sarcasm

It makes the neighbors happy no fast food traffic or trash, it brings more business hopefully meaning more jobs to the area. And in all reality, how many banks are on Reservoir Ave. anyway?

Coastway Bank, Admirals Bank, Santander, Washington Trust, and a Citizens right at the entrance of Garden City. I probably missed one.

@Elizabeth I am sure thry will close the Pontiac Ave loation. @Bob you need a hobby! A breakfast place would have been great here! The ones we have are all to small & always crowded!
PMarandola February 16, 2014 at 10:27 AM
Brewed Awakenings would have been perfect...they run a great show & maybe they could have had a drive thru....

I agree with you on both posts PMarandola. I can hope though that they won't close the other branch. A larger breakfast place would be nice.

Hey, lets add these to the list of insane recommendations you received...... -Nuclear waste storage facility -High security terrorist prison -Landing strip for jumbo jets -Sewage treatment plant -Deep space communication antenna site (so some of these posters can communicate with their loved ones at home).

Or let's give the local residents what they really want and leave it vacant so that it further decays until no one wants to buy it, an so that it can continue to not provide any tax revenue for the city. and it can eventually become an attractive nuisance so they can then complain about it being vacant instead of ranting about what some business wants to make it into now......

whew.. I'm sorry... I just needed to do that.

OR, how about this for a novel idea? We tell the local residents to pound sand, get the over regulating government bureaucracy out of the way of progress, let the capitalist free market decide on what business locates there, and maybe, just maybe, begin to get Rhode Island out of a 6 year economic depression, and begin to put people back to work again.

Just want something there. Don't much care what as long as it is clean, honest, and pays taxes.

wow another bank how original.more banks an more car lots and the cycle continues. the state of rhode island has now been officaly labotomized!
Joe The Plumber February 17, 2014 at 02:38 AM
Absolutely right "my world"!! Why should the State of Rhode Island have another Bank built, a symbol of capitalistic prosperity, an engine of economic growth, a bastion of industry? . I say, what we need at that location and what Rhode Island deserves is maybe another welfare office instead. I think that would fit into "my world" view very nicely.
