Should Blue Laws Be Banished?

The retail giant has already released its Black Friday sale circular online.

Shoppers in Rhode Island and Massachusetts will have to wait until after Thanksgiving to take advantage of Black Friday sales at retail giant Walmart.

Walmart locations across the rest of the country will open at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving. But in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, Blue Laws prohibit the store from opening that early in those two states.

Instead, Walmart will open at 1 a.m., which is also the time many other retailers, including Target, plan to open for business on Black Friday.

So what do you think? Do you support the tradition behind Rhode Island's blue laws, or is it time to join the rest of the country? Let is know in the comments section below.

Robert E I will not be working Thanksgiving but I have many times before. If you choose to stay at home fine but others like to go out and still others wish they had a job to go to. BTW if nobody had to work on Thanksgiving you would all be sitting by candle light. Forget watching football on TV (or your local high school) cuz somebody's working there. The point is there is a need/demand for all types of things that doesn't go away based on a calendar date. I don't want a law telling me I can't have something on a particular day. If someone doesn't want to open that's their right but don't stop them if they do.

I can guarantee you that the executives at target and walmart will not be working on the holiday where do they get off telling others they have to work the stores are open 363 days a year is it too much to ask to give your employees 2 days off a year. I have always worked in an job that required work on holidays but this is something new these stores were never open on Christmas and Thanksgiving and there is no need to force these employees to work now. These gready companies pay slave wages to start with and now they are taking awaythe 2 days the employees had. Its time people stand up to these gready cpmpanies and tell them we are not going to settle for their table scraps anymore It is corparate greed that is destroying this country. Maybe socialism isn't such a bad idea after all.

Sorry Robert but someone has to work on these days, police, fireman, radio djs, tow truck drivers, store clerks, athletes, stadium workers, etc.etc. When one has a job in a particular field there is understanding of this. They work some holidays but get other days off like ones that the traditional 9 to 5ers don't. We have also chosen what we do for a living so live with the good and the bad. And if this is just a stop over job while you look for something else, be lucky you have a place to earn money, usually at least time and a half, on these holidays. If that is too much for these workers to bear, then step aside because there is someone hungrier ready to jump in.
