Working Moms: How Does RI Rank?

It might seem surprising to some, but Rhode Island landed seventh in a recent survey.

Rhode Island might have one of the worst unemployment rates in the country, but it's a great place for working mothers to have a career, according to WalletHub.

The personal financial social network ranked the states on nine different metrics ahead of Mother's Day this weekend.

Rhode Island came seventh in overall rank, third in professional opportunities but fell in the middle of the pack for work-life balance at 21st.

Working Moms in Rhode Island

  • 26th – Child Care Rank
  • 50th – Child Care Costs
  • 3rd – Professional Opportunities Rank
  • 21st – Work-Life Balance Rank
  • 4th – Ratio of Female to Male Executives
Vermont ranked third overall, while Maine ranked fourth and Massachusetts ranked ninth. Oregon landed in first.

The WalletHub report's introduction:

"While women now comprise roughly half of the American workforce, they make about two-thirds as much as men and have far less upward mobility, as evidenced by the fact that less than 5% of Fortune 500 companies have female chief executives. Even the new crop of high-profile female CEOs seems to be drastically underpaid relative to their peers."
