Residents in Edgewood and other areas in Cranston heard what sounded like an explosion late last night, but officials say they found nothing.

Coast Guard crews and local officials searched land and sea but found nothing to explain the loud explosion sound heard by many residents along Narragansett Bay last night.

The explosion was heard around 11:30 p.m. and people in Edgewood, Gaspee and other areas reported hearing a boom. Others said they saw a light.

Crews from Warwick and East Providence dispatched marine task forces to search for a vessel in distress a short time later, but found nothing.

Scanner traffic indicated that some people heard a humming noise following the explosion sound, but Coast Guard officials told the Associated Press that it could be Conimicut lighthouse, which emits a hum pattern.

Crews were cleared and the search for a source of the noise ended around 1:30 a.m.
