Substitute Fired for Sending Kids Out in the Cold as Punishment

School officials said they have "dealt with the situation" which happened yesterday at Stadium School.

A substitute teacher who sent two third-grade children outside in the cold for talking in class yesterday at Stadium School has been fired, school officials said.

Ray Votto, chief operating officer for Cranston Public Schools, confirmed the incident but did not identify the substitute teacher because it is a personnel matter subject to confidentiality rules.

"It was reported to me by the principal yesterday when she was informed of the situation and we've dealt with the situation," Votto said.

Parents reportedly learned about the incident after the children returned home from school and told their parents.

Parents were up in arms on Facebook. One parent said her child told her that the "kids sent out were scared that they were going to get kidnapped or be found out there and sent to the principle for leaving the school [sic]."

"Are you kidding me?!" she said.

WOW... not sure WHY the substitute thought that was OKAY to do.... Shame on the substitute and suprised that there wasn't another way to let the child know that there is no talking in class......
Bob November 20, 2012 at 09:57 PM
The Substitute should be given a Medal of Valor for having to deal with the punk trash parents are raising today.....Good for Her.....!!!!!
Donovan Wilcox November 20, 2012 at 11:40 PM
Yeah... you're a friggin' idiot Bob... they were 8 year old 3rd graders scared out of their minds...
Suzanne Arena November 21, 2012 at 04:02 AM
Medal of Valor??? Really Bob! First of all, it's the parents who teach the kids values and right/wrong at HOME. The Teachers are supposed to protect the children's basic rights (as most parents do) and not send them out like that...8 yr olds - WTHeck! Doesn't sound like you have kids Bob. Sadly, this teacher can be hired anywhere else in Rhode Island. Yup, Fired from Cranston - but Hired in another City. Since they didn't release her name...it should be easier.
Joe Richer November 21, 2012 at 12:35 PM
I would not release the teacher for responsibility for their bad judgement. But I would like to know more about how teacher's are briefed on how to handle disruptive students. Perhaps also more about the hiring process. It's wrong to not look at the administration of any kind of operation then something goes wrong. Perhaps the administration did everything right and this still happened...it very well could be. Still, a procedural review seems to be in order. IMHO.

One of the kids on Channel 6 news at 11 last night said the substitute was a Mr. Evans
Ginny November 21, 2012 at 02:51 PM
Bob, you sound like a real jerk. How could you even say that?
Suzanne Arena November 21, 2012 at 03:40 PM
Joe R. ...I like your points. Needs to be said at the next school committee mtg.and put on record. We need this asked - will u do that?
jeff November 21, 2012 at 04:48 PM

John Anderson Realtor Gammons November 21, 2012 at 05:40 PM
I heard on CH 10 at noon, that they would not say if this teacher was fired or not.? Who in thier right mind puts 8 year olds outside alone on school grounds? Bizarre.
Chad November 21, 2012 at 06:50 PM
okay Jeff, thanks for the threat of violence post. You're a real dad now.
Angelena November 22, 2012 at 12:19 AM

Angelena November 22, 2012 at 12:24 AM
And it was a boy and a sub not the real teacher he is bad
TruthHonorValor November 22, 2012 at 08:17 PM
Let's face it folks, the sub acted in bad judgement. Nobody will dispute that. However, let's be a little introspective. When we were kids, subs were tortured. The only subs not tortured were the high profile subs (Pricipal's wife, etc.). Kim Swanson, I would like to think that the sub did try everything to control the kid(s). But subs are easy targets, as they have no rapport with the students. The sub lost control and resorted to a last ditch effort to restore discipline, a poor choice. But the kids themselves should be held responsible for their actions. I remember the kids who tortured subs. They were not good kids. Perhaps the parents should teach their children to respect their teachers, or the school should hold an assembly to explain to the students what proper bahavior in school should be. Is the sub guilty? Apparently so. What did the kids do to invoke this "discipline"? Nobody has seen fit to ask that question yet.

Was it a full time sub? Did they contact Dcyf ? That is child abuse did they call Cranston police maybe the parents should file charges with the police and Dcyf should be notified and parents of the kids contact the dept of Ed in writing other wise all would say it wasn't done. You parents know his name call the dept of Ed make ray votta do his job by turning it in too the authority And any dummy blaming ing the kids. What is your job field Keep away from kids
Suzanne Arena November 23, 2012 at 01:13 AM
Exactly right....what if this was a parent doing this behavior at a birthday party and a neighbor called dcyf? Fact....this teacher can work now in every other city BUT Cranston. They should go through a class of coping or anger. I don't believe a school should have to tell a teacher not to do such stupid things. Well, considering our hairdryers have labels on them saying don't use in the tub and the like....maybe we do need to spell out things. No, too much to cover. There should be a process during the certification stage where they ask profile like questions to weed out uncoping people.

Nice Attitude, your parents obviously failed.
Heather B November 24, 2012 at 01:39 PM
This story is oh so sad. I'm not sure what this sub was thinking but the school system should make the name public so they will NEVER get a teaching job as long as they live!!
Bob November 24, 2012 at 02:00 PM
your point being ????
Bob November 24, 2012 at 02:01 PM
Don't bring my parents into it Vinnie Boom Batz...yo Vinnnie
Vinnie B. November 24, 2012 at 02:05 PM
You can bring the children's parents into it but yours are off limits? Now THAT is funny! Nice 3rd grade retort BTW. Oh the Irony.
Suzanne Arena November 24, 2012 at 02:08 PM
I don't feel sorry for Mr. Evans. Hopefully the school will not just punish but help that sub by mandating the go to Anger Management (form of coping) or some kind of counseling. This teacher WILL absolutely be able to teach Heather, especially here in Rhode Island. We have formerally convicted criminals serving as elected officials and no one seems to care. There are no violens of sympathy for this guy if he chooses to not get help.
Lily Wong November 24, 2012 at 10:42 PM
I used to be a sub in the public school system (on the Island) and let me tell all of y'all!! yes...it was complete lack of discipline/self control (classroom management) that the sub did this.... yes....I'm glad the school district banned him from working in that district ever again (unfortunately, he can get a job subbing anywhere else) also, unfortunately, the school system doesn't do a very good job of verifying what makes "a good sub vs. a bad sub" From personal experience, "a body in a classroom is a body"....meaning...any schmuck who is breathing can apply and be accepted as a sub I've been in the classroom/hallways/lunchrooms/cafeterias enough to know that most of the "subs" DO NOT HAVE any idea of what they're doing/how to handle kids in the classroom (especially 20 or more at a time) Luckily, I am certified to teach and got myself into a good college and count my blessings and can truly say (for myself) that I WOULD NEVER had done what this guy did!!!
Bob November 25, 2012 at 02:36 PM
I love the fact that you idiots think I'm serious.....Your all like the rest of the gullable functional idiot Zombies we have in this state....fools....all of you
Vinnie B. November 25, 2012 at 02:38 PM
Yea ok Bob. You get called out for the Jackhole that you are and suddenly you're "kidding". No Bob, you are a bitter, spiteful, miserable person.
Robert Farebrother November 26, 2012 at 01:56 AM
Bob, you talk a lot of smack and this time it came back and bit you in your a@@.
Joe Richer November 26, 2012 at 03:25 PM
Hi Suzanne, Thanks for your kind remark. I am a bit ashamed to admit that I am currently working about 70 hours per week in order to assure my family's future and pay my taxes. I've recently given up (temporarily I hope) much of my volunteer time with Scouts and local causes in order to keep things in balance. Please feel free to use my name under this question if you like...or just go ahead and ask. I hope to more fully rejoin community activities in the next year or so.

Why isn't the school district pressing charges ? Where is their no tolerance rule? You Cranston press charges on kids for fighting in school ! Why the injustice of not pressing charges. Of a teacher commoting child abuse on children under the age of 13. Again another injustice of authorities picking and choosing a crime has been commited mr Evan should be charged breaking the law for child abuse. How much proof does Cran police need? A dead kid? A missing child? A mom lost her child for running into Cvs after being in the er and the parent was pic up meds. There is no justice in Cranston just injustice Mayor dung make people do their job by the law not their law they choose to follow. Kids who fight made the wrong decision but you see the schools press to the limit of Their rules and charge kids not their staff that is an injustice!
brucef December 03, 2012 at 01:07 AM
the substitute should of made them read the prayer banner
Suzanne Arena January 07, 2013 at 08:34 PM
How ridiculous your comments are. I started reviewing some of your postings and you clearly take the opposite side....perhaps just to hear another's response. "Nobody has seen fit to ask that question..." then go to a School Meeting meeting or another novel idea...write a letter and share the response. There is no Truth or Honor in your Valor because you hide behind your phoney name and lack of picture. It takes strength and courage to embrace others to show your face. Something I teach my children and to not HIDE - Lol! My 9 year old would have the same issue with this.
