ThanksGIVING

So, I have this client. They're a non-profit called Nickerson Community Center. I recently helped them revamp their website and we had a blast doing that. One thing about me is that I love my clients. I don't work with anyone I don't absolutely adore, because I put a lot into my work. If my client needs something, I jump right on board.

Here’s the thing.

Nickerson needs some turkeys. 260, in fact. They need them bad. They had a donation all lined up for Thanksgiving and it fell through. Thanksgiving, as every supermarket ad will tell you, is COMING UP SOON. It’s WEEKS…no, DAYS AWAY. And Nickerson wants to make sure the families they serve—which include infants, children, families, seniors, and veterans living in Olneyville—have turkeys on Thanksgiving.

I host Thanksgiving every year, so I know Thanksgiving. In our house it’s the only time of year that we get to stay put and have everyone come to us—no trekking “up to CT” for a holiday visit. As Thanksgiving approaches, I get all stressed out putting this whole shebang together and making sure we have what we need. Ask me about my spreadsheet on side dish responsibilities—I KNOW Thanksgiving.

My job in hosting Thanksgiving is simple, yet important. I do the turkey. The turkey is the main event; the whole meal hinges on it. You don’t have a Thanksgiving chicken, or a Thanksgiving haddock. It’s a Thanksgiving turkey.  If I do the turkey, the rest can fall into place rather easily. I grab a couple pies from Confreda’s and guests bring side dishes. I am lucky to have relatives who are genius cooks (Aunt Ruth, I’m talking about you) for these side dishes.

I’m lucky, period. And if you’re reading this blog, chances are, so are you. I know that times are tough and we’re all trying to enjoy our holidays on tighter budgets than ever, but I wonder…in the spirit of ThanksGIVING, could you spare a turkey? Or a $20 gift card to Shaw’s or Stop and Shop? Or just $20, donated via www.nickersoncc.org? Because it would make a huge difference to Nickerson and to the people they serve. The turkey is the thing. If we get that right, then it’s Thanksgiving for everyone.
