Cranston's Chateauneuf Receives AG Justice Award

Rhode Island Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin recently honored several individuals and organizations at the 9th annual Justice Awards.  Among those honored was Cranston resident Russell Chateauneuf.  The Justice Awards are given to individuals and community organizations in recognition of an extraordinary commitment to justice and the community, and are presented in honor of the eight previous Attorneys General.

A dedicated environmental leader, Chateauneuf was honored with the Attorney General Dennis Robert Justice Award for Environmental Protection.

Chateauneuf joined DEM in 1991 and has been the driving force behind major reforms in the regulation of on-site wastewater systems and storm water runoff that strengthened the protection of our land and waters, as well as public health. For the past 16 years, prior to his retirement in July, he has served as Chief of the Office of Water Resources, Groundwater and Wetlands Protection Section – managing statewide regulatory and non-regulatory programs focused on wetlands, groundwater and non-point sources of pollution.

Throughout his years of service with DEM, Chateauneuf demonstrated outstanding leadership and commitment to the mission of environmental protection, which has contributed in significant ways to the protection of Narragansett Bay and our costal ponds and watersheds.

“Rhode Island’s environment is better protected directly as a result of Russ’s vision and leadership by setting in motion programs and policies that have had – and will continue to have – a lasting positive impact on the quality of our land and waters,” said Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin.
