3-Year-Old Dies After Being Struck by SUV

Cranston Police said the girl, who was attending a birthday party, ran out into the street and was struck by the SUV, which could not stop in time.

A birthday party was beset by tragedy yesterday when a 3-year-old girl ran into the street and was struck by an SUV. She was pronounced dead after being transported to Hasbro Children's Hospital, police said.

Cranston Police Major Robert W. Ryan said the accident occured shortly before 7 p.m. last night. The girl, from Warwick, was attending a 40-year-old's birthday party in the vicinity of Broadmoor Road and Somerset Road.

Police said alcohol or drugs did not appear to be a factor in the accident, however the driver, identified as 34-year-old Anthony Momplaisir of Dexter Street in Providence, was driving with a suspended license.

Momplaisir was charged with driving with a suspended license, obstruction of justice and a warrant for failing to appear on an unrelated charge from Providence Police.

He is being presented to a bail commissioner today as a bail violator, Ryan said. He will be arraigned on the new Cranston charges tomorrow morning.
