Boats Burn at Rhode Island Yacht Club

Cranston Firefighters along with help from surrounding communities battled a fire at Rhode Island Yacht Club on Ocean Avenue that involved six boats and sent at least one person to the hospital overnight.

Firefighters, along with the state Department of Environmental Management, the United States Coast Guard and the state fire marshal and marine units from a slew of Rhode Island communities were at the scene hours after the flames first broke out around after 11 p.m.

At least six boats were damaged along with portions of the docks. Three of the boats have sunk and crews are concerned about leaking fuel under the water.

One person was taken from the scene on a stretcher but it is not clear how badly that person was hurt. People were trapped at the end of the dock because of the flames, firefighters said, and were rescued by a fire boat.

One firefighters suffered a back injury while battling the fire, firefighters said. Another person suffered chest pains.

Rhode Island Yacht Club is the oldest yacht club on Narragansett Bay, founded in 1875.

The fire brought memories of the severe fire that destroyed nearby Edgewood Yacht Club's clubhouse on a blizzarding January night in 2011.

In a message, members of Edgewood Yacht Club said "condolences to our neighbors down the bay."

More details will be posted as they become available.
