Prominent Youth Sports Coach Busted for Bath Salts

West Warwick police arrested Glen Lonardo, 48, for allegedly selling bath salts to a detective.
A prominent local youth sports leader is facing felony charges of selling bath salts to a detective out of his adult video store in West Warwick.

Glen Lonardo, 48, the owner of X-Citement Video on Quaker Lane in West Warwick, was also a board member of Cranston League for Cranston's Future and president of the CLCF Chiefs, a football and cheerleading league for children in grades 4 through 8. He also headed the CLCF Girls Softball league.

Court records show Lonardo allegedly delivered synthetic cathinones — a schedule I controlled substance — to a West Warwick detective on Jan. 17. The drug, identified as Alpha-PVP, is one of several variants of what more commonly is referred to as bath salts.

Lonardo was arrested and charged with felony possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver on Jan. 18 and was initially ordered held without bail. He was released on Jan. 21 on $25,000 surety bail after entering no plea to the charges, which is customary for felony arraignments in District Court.

He is due to reappear in court on April 14 for for an Attorney General conference.

Lonardo resigned his positions with CLCF last Friday, according to the organization's president, Jim Dillon.

Records also show that Lonardo registered a business name of Buddha's Bazaar — the same name of a smoke shop on Cranston Street that was the site of a raid by Cranston Police last August. That raid came after a series of incidents involving people high on bath salts within walking distance of the shop.

Calls to lawyers for Lonardo were not immediately returned.

West Warwick Police have not yet released any details about the circumstances surrounding the arrest.

More details will be posted as they become available.

Speaking from experience, Glen took all he could and worried about only himself. Ask the parents that worked for years before him as volunteers to build up the football program. He came in and spent every dollar foolishly with no oversight by the Board. He replaced volunteers because he didn't "like" them with his personal friends, many of whom had no ties to the community. Many parents took their children elsewhere to play because their complaints fell on deaf ears. Hopefully, the State Police and AGs Office looks a lot deeper than just his dealings with drugs.

@ Joe, Your comments made me actually spit out my turkey and cheese sandwich which by the way was terrific . Listen carefully, what Glen does for a living is his business and his alone. Glen selling drugs and getting arrested for drug distribution unfortunately is everyone's business. You need to remember he molds the minds and bodies of young boys and girls. Anyone who gets arrested for selling narcotics has no place being that role model. I would say you owe me a sandwich but we will call it even if you never post again.
Aaron Hernandes January 28, 2014 at 04:33 PM
I read these comments in support of this man and have to ask, did your child ever participate in any of these programs? You are correct that it is not illegal to own a porn shop, but is this who you want to be your child's role model? What abot character on and off the field? These are my opinions.....while my child played in the league run by this man, we saw a mass exodus of football players since he would not let one of the best coaches coach, anyone who did not agree with him was asked to not be a team helper or be on the board, he actually kicked one of the kindest boys and his mom out of the league because his mom questioned his policies, he stacked the teams he coached so they would win, he could no longer have parent run concessions, since he drove away all the parents who did it and the list goes on and on. So what if the other team that was part of his league lost almost all of their games-the main point was how his team did. He lived vicariously through his team and it was as if he was the 10 year old- not coaching 10 year olds. CLCF football has always been a great program and it will succeed very well under new leadership. CLCF as a program needs to stop turning a blind eye to what is going on in their programs-since it appears there was a raid at one of his shops 6 months ago. I think it would be helpful for the Cranston/State Police to do a thorough review of the finances of all of the CLCF programs. How many of the Board members actually have kids in the programs? If they did, they would know what is going on. Time for new leadership. PS stop blamming Fung-he has nothing to do with CLCF.

Well said Aaron!
Brandon January 28, 2014 at 06:47 PM
Aaron that is all true nicely said. Did anyone go to the banquet three yrs ago for football where he sold so many tickets no one could sit and eat or even move not to mention everyone was at risk if there was a fire ?? All he cared about was the money he was pocketing. There must hve been 500 people in a place that held 250 and that was after many people left . The police and fire department came and forced people to leave . He put everyone and there children at risk to line his pockets and anyone that thinks this is his first arrest for bath salts sadly mistaken. It is sad that CLCF need this to happen to open its eyes .

I am not from Cranston, and I have no problem with porn shops. I do have a problem with anyone who sells these horrible highly addictive drugs that ruin lives. I have 2 teenagers that are lucky to be alive after being addicted to bath salts/fake marijuana. They were violent, broke windows, threw furniture, didn't care about anyone or anything and would smoke in the house (there is no smell left over like the real stuff). They told me they would hallucinate while high, they couldn't remember what happened while high, their speech would be impaired and they were literally smoking 20 times per day. After the last year from hell and months of rehab, life in our family is finally starting to get back to "normal". I can guess that the only side to Mr. Lonardo's story is one of greed and ignorance. Greed from the amount of money this man has surely made off these drugs and ignorance to the effects it has on its victims.
Marcus January 28, 2014 at 07:28 PM
I'm shocked to see people defend this guy. The man is contributing to the degradation of society. So you really think a guy that sells drugs should be a role model for children. This league was not run well and the man even degrades his own kid in front of others. Good parenting.

Big Love to you @Aaron
Aaron Hernandes January 29, 2014 at 04:22 PM
Before I retire, a couple of additional comments on this great leader. Again, my personal opinions based upon my interactions with this man because he coached my son for what seemed like 100 years-ok, maybe 8 years. Weren't and Emily-I can bet you $100 your son was never coached by Glen. If so, you would feel very differently. You do not see players' parents coming to his defense, so if you are his sister or brother in law, we expect you to defend him. You know how they always teach you there is no I in team, he spelled team GLEN. He ran his offense, so his son carried the ball (the same offense, over and over). From kindergarten until the kid got into high school-he was the team captain-never mind the inner city kid that was a super star. Did he take an innercity kid to his house-yes, but the kid was the best kid on his team. You never saw him express an interest in the average kid, because he banned them to the other team. The funny part is these are the kids who are super stars in high school. For those of you who do not think it is a big deal that he owned a porn shop or compare it to 7-11, ponder this. I can take my son into 7-11, but if there is nothing wrong with his store, why must you be 18 to enter and why are the windows blocked out. Finally, what is the big deal with bath salts? They are illegal and the same drug some loser in Florida was on when he ate off another man's face. I can assure you if your son was coached by this man (football-cannot speak for softball) you would be doing a happy dance right now. As a Cranston resident, I do not want Buddah (wonder why he named it that) or XXXcitement in my town and I am very happy that he will not be coaching for a very long time. Am I being a Cranston snob, nope. I live 10 miles away from it, but feel for the people who have to deal with the creeps that go in there. For the guy who posted something about us probably going into his shop-shame on you. We are parents and we raise our kids the right way. Porn is disgusting and normal 40 year old people don't need it to have fun. PLUS if I wanted porn, why would I go to a store to buy it?? Finally to Kristen-I should have had the balls to step up for you when he banned you from the league, but I was not man enough and was more concerned about my son's playing time. Many of us are at fault and we admit it. The best thing that could have happened to you was getting banned. You did the right thing and many of us did the wrong think by not backing you. No excuses, but he ran it with such a tight fist we were all afraid for the retaliation or that we would get banned, too. You and your son are awesome and better off not being affiliated with CLCF. PS to the person who talked about the banquet-you should have gone to the scummy place in Fall River (why is a Cranston team having their banquet in Fall River) with the crack heads in the parking lot. I was terrified I was going to get held up. God Bless-and Kristen, sorry.
Frank Rizzo January 29, 2014 at 05:58 PM
Good post, Aaron. Nice to see the BS post about the previous girls softball president get taken down, too. If someone has allegations like that to make they should call the Cranston PD with them instead of posting them here. I never met Mr. Lonardo but he seems to have left a wake of destruction behind him. The only support for him here is from people who are obviously related to him. Not one former player has written in support. That should speak volumes!
Elizabeth Roy January 29, 2014 at 06:52 PM
That is why I posted earlier that the parents should come forward and demand an investigation, current and past. I think the thug mentality has gone on long enough. I do not have a child involved in CLCF, but feel this is a must!
nicole fine January 29, 2014 at 09:56 PM
I am not sure how much overview the Mayor or City Council actually has over CLCF. They have their own Board and run things internally, from what I have been told of the group.
Kristen L January 30, 2014 at 09:51 AM
If you are serving the youth of the city's community and use the name of the city in your 501C3 name, then the mayor has every right to request an inquiry be conducted by the city's police department, state police, and AGs office. Especially when that city receives a complaint from a parent that may have just moved out of the city, but had been a resident for 5 plus years!
Cranston Parent February 01, 2014 at 02:44 AM
Why is it that when glen was in charge of CLCF football the registration fees were higher than any other league? I'm Also curious as to where the monies went. And why is it that glen was living scituate while his children attended both western hills and cranston west? Shouldn't he reimburse the city for this?
Cranston Parent February 01, 2014 at 02:50 AM
It's a disgrace what mr lonardo did to this league. Not only did many kids/parents left the league because of how he ran it but many of the Clcf board members quit because of him. Well mr lonardo you know what they say about Karma! It's just too bad it took this long
Elizabeth Roy February 01, 2014 at 08:51 AM
More interesting information Cranston Parent. Like I previously stated, parents need to demand a full investigation. And, he should be charged with reimbursing the city for his children's education. Lastly, don't you just love Karma? This guy has blatantly taken advantage of every person involved int he CLCF organization....time to pay up jerk!
Weren't February 01, 2014 at 09:00 AM
Wow are you people truly sick!! You need to seek professional counseling or maybe you need some religion in your life, how pathetic can you be to actually be happy to see somebody else go through what this man is going through and be happy about it! He has children and a wife that had nothing to do with this at all you people are sick people I guess it's true what they say misery loves company. Honestly find something better else to do with your time to sit home and be happy about other people's miseries you talk about karma? You are all due for a little taste of it your self I can't wait to see one of you fall flat on your face i'm going to be the first one there pointing and laughing at you! There are so many other bad things going on in society rape, child molestation, child-abuse murder and you guys just sitting here wasting your time on somebody who ALLEGEDLY did something wrong. And now you're talking about embezzlement honest to God get a life get a clue because most of you on this post are truly clueless.
Steeler February 02, 2014 at 09:47 AM
To Weren't...Your loyalty to this man makes it obvious that you are related or a close friend. You really have nothing to say with any merit, you are just trying to deflect (Counseling 101). This lashing out comes from years of widespread bad treatment by this individual, and now people are not afraid to come out with it, because they no longer fear for the treatment of their children. This is all under a youth organization forum. No one has said anything about his wife or kids, and no one has accused him of murder, child abuse, rape, etc... What he is "going through" has been brought on by himself. None of us "sick" people wish for anything bad for his family. It's actually comical that you try to turn it on the entire community. What the vast majority of us do with our time is work hard at our jobs and boost the community, and do not use our small businesses or jobs as a front, and get arrested for selling illegal drugs - ALLEGEDLY! None of us care whether you will be sitting at home waiting to point the finger and laugh at us, while waiting for our mug shots to appear in the paper. And, you apparently haven't spoken to some of the past football treasurers, who were relieved of their duties for asking for receipts. You are the one who is clueless!
Steeler February 02, 2014 at 09:57 AM
To Mr. Hernandez...Thank you for being so honest and candid about your past experience. Everything you have said is true, and there are dozens of others who can verify. Another thing you may not have known, was that just after the defection of those coaches and players, this individual called the West Warwick organization to trash those well-liked coaches, calling them "troublemakers". MORE IMPORTANTLY, he called all the kids "minimum play players". Well, these same players went on to win 3 straight state championships, and many were important players on the team. Many played either QB or RB, (positions they would never have been allowed to play), as well as staring defense, and continue to play those positions as important parts of their respective high school teams (including West, East, Hendricken and LaSalle). The decision for them to leave Cranston was never easy, just necessary. Oh, and yes, Kristen, we all apologize. We were a little shell shocked, and by the time everyone realized it, the entire board had been eliminated.
Elizabeth Roy February 02, 2014 at 10:31 AM
Thank you Steeler. Though I do not have any children involved in the organization, it disgusts me and breaks my heart that the powers that be have been putting themselves before the children they supposedly wanted to guide. This is truly a mess and hope EVERYTHING comes to light very soon. I cannot believe people are standing by this man. Sadly they are fools.
Kristen L February 11, 2014 at 04:05 PM
To all of you who wish to defend CLCF and Glen Lonardo... I found my notes which were sent to the City of Cranston the other day. Do I harbor anger towards him? Yes! Did I say it's about time when I was told about his arrest and subsequent resignation from the CLCF positions that he held? Absolutely. Our children need positive role models in their lives. People that value honesty and have integrity. They don't need to see manipulation and the use of weapons such as fear and intimidation which based upon the posts I have read were in Glen's repertoire as a CLCF head since 2008. 1. November 13, 2008: The CLCF Football Board had their monthly meeting. It was during this meeting that we were told that Glen Lonardo had been voted in as CLCF Football Chair. I suggested by-laws and asked for Mr. Lonardo to show the current volunteers the courtesy of including us all into what the changes were that he was making and to speak to everyone rather than a few to prevent rumors. Mr. Lonardo's response was that he was placed in charge and could run the organization how he chose per Ernie Tomasiello, CLCF President. "Either as a dictatorship or a democracy." (these were his exact words) 2. November 14, 2008: Glen Lonardo sent me an email regarding the meeting. I responded. Essentially the email states that I wasn't being a team player by asking for by-laws and for him to communicate his intended changes rather than using the rumor mill. I responded that it was reasonable to ask and rather than continue the rumors, I was asking the source which was out of respect to him. He "fired" me from my volunteer position. 3. I attended the banquet in January and was thanked by by the outgoing CLCF Football Chairman for my hard work and dedication. Everyone else received an award as recognition, but I did not. I did not speak to Glen Lonardo on this day. I was later told by the secretary, that Glen Lonardo was the one that was in charge of ordering all awards and couldn't believe that he didn't include me as he should have. 4. March 2009: I spoke with a few of the current volunteers of CLCF Football that knew I was still planning on registering my son to the league that he has playing with for the past three years. They informed me that Glen Lonardo had said he was not going to allow me to register my son for football. 5. March 14, 2009: I called Glen Lonardo to see if what I had been told was true. I identified myself and asked if what I had heard was in fact true. He immediately asked who had given me that information. I informed him that it didn't matter and that he answered my question just by how he responded. I told him he didn't have the right to deny my son registration because he didn't like me. He then said that he never said that he wasn't going to allow me to register Tyler. He then became extremely argumentative and vulgar, so I hung up the phone. Glen immediately called back. I did not answer and let the call go to voice mail. Glen then left an extremely nasty and vulgar message on my voice mail. He said the following: "Why don't you, why don't you finish the conversation you (expletive) coward. You just love startin' (expletive) don't you. You're the biggest pain in the (expletive) I've ever met. And I did not say that, but I do have the right and guess what you start (expletive) with me, then I will not let you sign up. You can go to anybody you want to. You pain in the (expletive). Go to Warwick . You live in Warwick now, go to Warwick , go bother ________. You caused enough trouble over here. You're a troublemaker. You're a lose screw." I never responded. 6. March 28, 2009: I registered my son for CLCF Football. I did not speak to Glen Lonardo on this day. 7. May 1, 2009: I received a certified letter from Glen Lonardo and Ernie Tomasiello stating that my son's registration had been denied. I was never called by anyone on the CLCF board regarding the situation. They went on Glen's word alone.
Elizabeth Roy February 11, 2014 at 04:27 PM
Wow! What an egotistical mean self-righteous (expletive)! This organization needs to be intensely investigated! What was done to you and your son was disgusting. I hope he pays dearly for his actions; however, money talks and B walks so he will probably slide by with nothing more than a slap on the wrist for his despicable behavior and attitude!
Joe The Plumber February 12, 2014 at 09:25 AM
They should just let the kids run their own CLCF. They would act more like adults than the idiots posting in this discussion. They would probably do a better job too.
Kristen L February 12, 2014 at 04:50 PM
hmmm. That's funny Joe... You do realize that you just called yourself an idiot!
Elizabeth Roy February 12, 2014 at 09:07 PM
Good one Kristin! Apparently Joe didn't realize this. He is another idiot among the rest of us idiots posting opinions about this idiot who thought he could run CLCF his way. Hmmm.
Joe The Plumber February 16, 2014 at 04:23 PM
You have made my point ladies....
Sugar February 19, 2014 at 08:25 AM
I enjoy reading these posts, please don't stop!! I can tell the difference from the ones that are related to Mr. Lonardo and those that are not related. I personally know Mr. Lonardo and I do NOT support him. Every negative comment written on this post is 100% accurate. I feel for Kristen L. As a parent, you don't want actions taken against your child. They did you a favor by denying his registration. Lets not forget that Mr. Tomassiello also ruined the hockey program at CLCF. Money, Greed and Power (short man syndrome). Mr Lonardo will have his day in court, might even just get off with a slap on the wrist but what he did is going to hang over his head for the rest of his life. Karma
Elizabeth Roy February 19, 2014 at 09:41 AM
Well said Sugar. I don't know anyone at this organization, but I do know these behaviors are unacceptable and for years I have heare people make derogatory comments about CLCF from questionable practices to gross disorganization. Apparently these behaviors reaped certain people monetary rewards.
Bench Rider February 19, 2014 at 04:36 PM
As I read everyone of these posts, I notice there is NOT one comment of support from ANYONE who has ever played for this man. What does that tell you?
Elizabeth Roy February 19, 2014 at 05:20 PM
About says it all Bench Rider.
