CPD Earns Prestigious Accreditation

The Cranston Police Department is now nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies. It also earned "advanced accreditation," which only 5 percent of police departments have achieved.

The earned high marks as it recently become nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies.

The highly-prized distinction is bestowed on police departments across the country that follow high standards and best practices and comes after a rigorous examination including a site visit by an assessment team, a community survey and an examination of "all aspects of the agency's policies and procedures, management, operations and support services."

Cranston was visited on Dec. 10 by the team, which reviewed records and interviewed members of the department.

On Saturday,  Cranston Police Chief Marco Palombo Jr. underwent a formal question and answer session, capping the months-long review process that concluded the department reached full compliance with 464 out of 464 national standards and best practices. Along the way, the department earned an "advanced accreditation" award recognition.

"The panel complimented the agency for utilizing an inclusive approach in the development of policies and procedures," a release stated.

Cranston's accreditation team was comprised of Capt. Sean Carmody, Sgt. Donald Capuano and Officers Lee Sohn and Brian Pinelli.The chief commended the team for their "dedication and determination."

"This is a significant achievement for the agency and there were many weeks and months of assessing, reporting and providing proofs of compliance for all 464 standards. This group really came through for us. I am proud to serve with them."

Advanced accreditation lasts for three years before another examination. Just 5 percent of all law enforcement agenices in the country achieve that mark.

Palombo said in addition to professionalizing the department, it "reduces common liability issues associated with municipal policing."

"It truly is rewarding to have external validation for our community that reflects the Department's commitment to excellence," Palombo said.
