Cranston Man Caught with Drugs in Conn.

A quartet of Rhode Island men are facing drug-related charges after the group was stopped by Greenwich, Conn. Police for driving without their headlights illuminated at about 1:30 in the morning.

According to police, Daniel Leonard, 27, of Warwick, was driving a Lexus with three passengers on Delavan Avenue in the Byram neighborhood of Greenwich without the headlights on at 1:20 a.m. April 3. After he was given written warning for driving without headlights, he agreed to allow police to search the vehicle, according to the report.

During the search, officers "discovered numerous illicit drugs that were field tested ... positive for various illicit drugs," according to the report, which did not identify the drugs or quantity found.

Leonard was arrested for illegal possession of a hallucinogen and illegal possession of marijuana. He was released after posting $260 bond.

Also charged:

  • Daniel J. Costa, 20, of East Providence, RI: illegal possession of marijuana and three counts of illegal possession of a hallucinogen. He was unable to post $500 bond.
  • Daniel P. Eckert, 26, of Hamburg, NY: illegal possession of a hallucinogen, illegal possession of marijuana and interfering with an officer for allegedly giving police a false name. He was unable to post $250 bond.
  • Matthew McCarthy, 34, of Cranston, RI: illegal possession of a hallucinogen, illegal possession of marijuana and refusal to to be fingerprinted. He was unable to post $1,000 bond.
All four are scheduled to appear April 10 in state Superior Court in Stamford.
