Cranston Man Found with Pot, Cocaine, Pills after Traffic Stop

Cranston Police charged a 39-year-old Cranston man with three counts of felony narcotics possession after he was pulled over and officers found a cache of marijuana, cocaine and assorted prescription drugs in his car.

Police said Vernard V. Ashe, 39, of 127 Park View Blvd., Cranston, was seen driving his 1995 Toyota when he didn't use his turn signal.

Once stopped, Officer Michael Long reported that he smelled a strong odor of burnt marijuana coming from the car.

Ashe appeared nervous, police said, and his hand was trembling when he handed over his license and registration.

When asked if he had any drugs in the car, Ashe reportedly glanced at the car's center console and then put his hands in his pockets and said "no."

But Long believed Ashe was up to something and his nervous behavior was "an extent beyond the innocent motoring public."

Ashe was ordered out of the car and officers found a wad of about $1,200 in his pocket.

In the car, police found a small bag containing cocaine, two prescription bottles filled with assorted pills, some held together in small plastic baggies. They also found another $1,470 cash, two small bags of marijuana, six cell phones, two GPS devices, two digital scales, two boxes of sandwich bags and a bag of rubber bands.

Police said Ashe's cell phone contained dozens of text messages from people asking where he was and if he could meet them to buy drugs.

Ashe was arraigned and ordered held without bail at the Adult Correctional Institutions as a probation violator. He is due to appear in court on July 22.
