Cranston Officers Ride in Bike Tour to Honor the Fallen

Two Cranston Police officers — Peter Leclerc and Robert Santagata — rode in the 2013 Police Unity Bike Tour, a four-day bike tour that started in 1997 to honor and raise awareness of law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty.

This year's ride hit close to home after the death of Providence Police Sgt. Maxwell Dorley, who died in the line of duty in April of 2012.

Leclerc and Santagata visited the Providence Police Department to present a plaque representing the ride this year along with patches from the departments in Rhode Island that participated.

The plaque will hang on the wall in the Providence Public Safety Complex "as a reminder of their hard work and preparation for this four day ride," according to a Providence Police Department release.

The bike tour was in May, beginning in New Jersey and ending at the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, DC.

The tour has raised nearly $12 million for the monument as well as the construction of a new museum that will open in 2015.
