Cranston Police Stepping up DUI Patrols this Weekend

Officers from the police department will be teaming up with officers and troopers as part of the Southern Rhode Island DUI task force, which will have more than 35 law enforcement officials on patrol in ten communities this weekend.

Cranston Police are staffing extra officers and will be out en masse this weekend in the hopes of deterring and stopping drunk drivers.

Officers from the police department will be teaming up with officers and troopers as part of the Southern Rhode Island DUI task force, which will have more than 35 law enforcement officials on patrol in ten communities this weekend.

"Please remember if you are going to drink, think about designating a sober driver, taking a taxi or staying at a friends' home," said Cranston Police Lt. Matthew C. Moynihan.

If you see a potentially drunk driver, or know of someone getting into a car they shouldn't, call 911 or *77 on your cell phone.

This weekend is typically a busy one for law enforcement, as colleges celebrate commencement ceremonies. In addition, the air show is happening in Quonset, among other events.

The Rhode Island Office on Highway Safety's Blue Rip Tide grant program is paying for the effort.

Departments from South Kingstown, North Kingstown, Richmond, Charlestown, East Greenwich, Narragansett, West Greenwich, Jamestown and Westerly are part of the task force along with the Rhode Island State Police.
