Customer Tackles Fleeing Bank Robber

Several people, including a few bank employees, held Nicholas Chateauneuf to the ground until police arrived after the Washington Trust on Plainfield Pike was robbed this afternoon.

A man who reportedly robbed the Washington Trust on Plainfield Pike this afternoon is in police custody after a customer chased him down and tackled him.

Police said the bank was robbed at 3:15 p.m. by Nicholas Chateauneuf, of 40 Nickerson St., Cranston.

Chateauneuf walked into the bank wearing a Red Sox hat, sunglasses and black jacket while talking on his cell phone. He allegedly handed the teller a note telling her to give him money with no dye packs and to do it quickly without activating an alarm.

Chateauneuf then ran from the bank with the money in a plastic Walmart bag. On his way out the door, a customer chased him and eventually tackled him at a business next door, police said.

Several people, including some bank employees, helped hold Chateauneuf down until Cranston Police arrived.

Police said the incident is still under investigation and Chateauneuf is being held at Cranston Police Headquarters.
