Felony Charges for Hopkinton Cop who Sparked SWAT Standoff
Cranston Police charged John Patton with carrying a weapon while intoxicated, a felony, in connection with the July 5 armed standoff in Garden City.
A Hopkinton Police sergeant who allegedly caused an armed standoff in Garden City last week is facing felony charges of carrying a weapon while intoxicated.
Additionally, charged John Patton, 45, of 149 Plantation Drive, Cranston, with two misdemeanors: falsely reporting a crime and disorderly conduct.
Cranston Police have not released any details about the July 5 incident. Neighbors said they saw a SWAT team outside surrounding the house. Patton was reportedly having a visit with a family member when the disturbance occurred.

Patton was eventually led away peacefully by police and taken to a hospital for evaluation.
Patton, a 12-year-veteran of the Hopkinton Police Department, was arraigned at the hospital before a justice of the peace yesterday and was released on $10,000 personal recognizance, according to court records. He did not enter a plea, which is customary for felony arraignments.

He will return to court on Sept. 11 for a prearraignment disposal conference.
