National Education Association of Rhode Island Executive Director Robert A. Walsh was at the Ocean State Follies Friday night when a picture of smoke pouring out of his office building at 99 Bald Hill Road appeared on his phone.

At first, "I thought it was a humorous picture," Walsh said.

But it wasn't.

Cranston Fire Department Dep. Chief Stephen Joyce said the fire, which started around 10 p.m, appears to have started in Elan Designs, a salon next door to the NEARI office in the multi-unit commercial building right near the Cranston and Warwick border.

The fire remains under investigation.

Walsh said his office suffered smoke damage and "there were issues making sure it had not spread into the ceiling."

"Still assessing," Walsh said, noting that it was a good thing he wasn't the Follies' mystery guest.

Desperately trying to get in touch with anyone from Elan. Does anyone know if they will be reopening at a new location and if so, where? Made all my wedding bookings here and the wedding is coming up.

Robin - the original owners were Elaine and Steven Shapiro - I believe the may have sold to her daughter....Elaine is on Facebook - and she works for Jewish Family Services - you may want to try and reach her there. Her posts indicate they are not opening again and staff have gotten jobs at other salons - ?? Seem to have given up on reopening. Hope this info helps.

Another thought - I go to Moretti Salon on Atwood Ave., Cranston - they do wedding parties and are wonderful people - Tammy Moretti. There is also Calma and XO Salon, both in Cranston - all do great jobs.

Sad to have lost a great masseuse. Wish I knew where she went.
