Firefighters Battle Three Alarm Blaze on Park Avenue

Fire broke out around before 10 p.m.

A large fire swept through a three-story mixed use residential and commercial building on Park Avenue late Friday night.

The three-alarm fire consumed a portion of the third floor and appears to have started there.

The building, located at 553 Park Ave., has apartments above a couple businesses, including Phunky Stuff. Employees of Phunky Stuff stood across the street waiting to be let into the store.

"We'll reopen as soon as possible," said Shanjina Moronta of Phunky Stuff.

Moronta, along with Kelia Bravo of the shop kept a positive attitude despite their shop being inunduated with water and smoke.

"What can you do," Bravo said. "At least nobody got hurt."

Few details are available at this time. More information will be posted soon.

It does not appear anyone was injured during the fire.

It took almost an hour for the flames to be knocked down.

Park and Elmwood Avenues are blocked to traffic as several ladder trucks, rescue vehicles and other fire vehicles work the scene.

A large crowd of onlookers gathered to watch the firefighters work.

The road was littered with debris.

Witnesses said there was a cat and some hamsters in one of the apartments and it appeared they were not rescued.

Stay tuned to Patch for more details.

Thank goodness no one was injured, but my best wishes go out to the business owners for their loss.
