Inmate Charged with Assault after Attacking CO

An inmate at the Adult Correctional Institutions in Cranston has been charged with felony assault and assault on a correctional officer after he allegedly punched a CO, breaking his nose and chipping a tooth.

A Department of Corrections spokesperson said Anthony A. Tavares, a man who was found not guilty by reason of insanity in 2001 for killing his caseworker and is at the ACI being held on 2012 charges for allegedly attacking staff and patients at Eleanor Slater Hospital, struck CO Michael Aguilar during a strip search.

The Providence Journal reported that Tavares was being searched after a visit, which is standard procedure.
