Judge Rules Police Can't Round up Pensions

A Superior Court judge has ruled that Cranston Police officers can't get credit for a full 20 years of service by rounding up their pensions if they've worked at least 19 years, six months and one day.

The old rule was OK when the city administered its own pension plan, but today, with the majority of police officers in the state run Municipal Employee Retirement System, the officers must work 20 years to get 20 years credit, despite the police officers' contract stating otherwise, the Providence Journal reported.

Local union officials said they aren't sure if they'll appeal the decision.
