Lightning Strikes House, Providence Water Facility in Cranston

Lightning struck Cranston on Wednesday morning, causing fires.

A powerful band of thunderstorms brought deafening thunder and lightning strikes to Cranston Wednesday morning, including one that struck an Applehouse Drive home.

The lightning, accompanied by hail in some areas, caused a smoke condition inside the house at 6 Applehouse Drive, according to early reports.

The strike was so loud, it caused Steven Martin, who lives across the street, to jump out of bed "so quick" because he thought a bomb had exploded.

"I'm shaking right now," he said, noting that the power was now out.

About 65 National Grid customers are without power in western Cranston, according to the utility company.

Another possible fire was reported inside the Providence Water Building at 430 Scituate Ave.

This is a developing story. More details will be posted as they become available.
