Updated: Liquor Store Employee Shot in Face During Robbery Attempt

Updated, 8:22 a.m.

Cranston Police are investigating a shooting during a robbery attempt at Sungio's Classic Liquors on Plainfield Street near the Johnston Line late Thursday night that sent one person to the hospital with gunshot wounds to the face and leg.

Police were called to the scene of the liquor store at 1362 Plainfield Street at 9:48 p.m. for a report of a shooting.

Police said an employee of the store was shot twice, once in the leg and once in the face, and was transported to Rhode Island Hospital in serious condition.

The shooter is reportedly still at large and was last seen wearing a red T-shirt with a black hooded sweatshirt. Witnesses said he got into a small dark vehicle with round tail lights and was possibly carrying a duffle bag for the robbery attempt.

The suspect is about six feet tall with a medium build and fled the scene towards Tweed Street.

The investigation is ongoing and police have not released many details. Several witnesses have been interviewed at police headquarters.

Johnston Police stopped a Chevrolet Impala with Massachusetts license plates in connection with the incident, but it is unclear if the vehicle was involved and police said they have not made any arrests yet.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
