Palombo Steps Down as Cranston Police Chief

Police Chief Marco Palombo Jr. retired effective Monday.

Cranston Police Chief Marco Palombo Jr., has retired.

Cranston Mayor Allan W. Fung announced the embattled police chief's retirement on Monday afternoon, stating Palombo was reinstated "for the sole purpose of receiving correspondence announcing his attention to retire as Cranston's Chief of Police, effective today."

Fung said "it was the right thing to do and I have accepted Col. Palombo's retirement letter."

In a statement, Fung said "it is time for new leadership in the Cranston Police Department" and announced an immediate search for a new chief.

State Police Capt. Kevin Barry will continue to lead the department until a new chief is selected. Barry was appointed chief after Fung asked the State Police to take over the department in the wake of the so-called ticket bltiz parking ticket scandal and other issues plaguing department morale.

Fung said the state police are still conducting an objective review of the police department.

@PMarandola I am not related to him nor have I ever met him. But in a community, it is important to boost our leaders instead of bringing them down. It is proven that Chief Palombo has done nothing wrong. It was Stephen Antonucci who ordered the parking tickets as it said in the Cranston herald weeks ago. You people need your facts straight. "Investigate him" why? There is nothing to investigate about Palombo. Clearly the Mayor has an issue with Palombo or is threatened by him in some way. Why did he have to take the fall for everything and be made to look guilty when it was someone beneath him who was behind it all. Something fishy is going on with mayor. and @becca is definitely someone who has been in contact with the mayor and Palombo before because she is way too involved with these postings. Not that my two cents matters but I felt that someone needed to be on Palombos side because he needs someone to not shit on his every move like @PMarandola and @Becca

@Lillie C I have lived in this City all of my life! I also read the newspaper, watch the news, attend council mtgs. I also follow election(s) closely so I can choose the best candidate for my City. Palumbo campaigned with Fung as well as all the other "boys" you know the ones involved in the ticket scandal. His wife also worked at City Hall for a brief stunt...The City did not need a new chief appointed when Fung won, the chief in place was doing a good job however he was forced out & replaced with all these officers, so we pay nice pensions and higher salary's just what we DIDN'T need! I only know the mayor by site, not personally but as I said I read listen attend maybe you should do this also! If Palumbo is so innocent why the suspension? It will be interesting to see the outcome and as I believe KARMA & the truth prevails! So Lillie C. pay attention as the reports will be coming! I welcomed Captain Barry as the RISP will reveal the findings. I also welcome a new Colonel once found. The old boy network has been disposed of! @PMarandola continue to post as I love facts! Have a great night!

Lillie C, there's an old saying, the fish rots from the head down. Antonucci most likely wouldn't have done what he did if he didn't think he could get away with it. If Palumbo is as good as all his supporters say he is, why did it take a State Police investigation to expose Antonucci's little game? If Polumbo was a true leader he would have had Antonucci on leave within days of finding out about this mess, assuming he didn't know about it all along.

Thank you Patrick! And if you read what antonnuci said the order came from from city hall? So did Fung tell Palumbo to have it done gonna be interesting! Either way fungi make a huge mistake appointing Palumbo & now he can thank him for ruining his political career! Cranston needs new blood!

Lillie...it's called accountability ...when you are the CHIEF...it is your responsibility to know what your Captain is doing! You can't cry.."oh he didn't do anything wrong". Grow up!
