Police Charge Man for Using Steps as Bathroom, Caught With Pants Down

Police said they caught Richard Deroche, 33, of 30 Howard Ave., defecating on the steps across the street from Kattan's Market.

Cranston Police said they found an intoxicated man in the process of relieving himself on the steps of a building near on Aug. 6. around 10:30 p.m.

The man, identified as 33-year-old Richard DeRoche reportedly told police that he was on his way to the Harrington Hall homeless shelter. 

Police said they were dispatched to the area after a report of two intoxicated males.

The responding officer reported that he saw a white male sitting down on the stairs across the street. When he asked Deroche what he was doing, he said "I'm taking a [expletive]."

Police said there was a pile of excrement under Deroche. He then pulled up his pants and tried to walk away, but almost fell and was unsteady.

Police said Deroche swore at officers and told them that he would not go to the hospital. 

Police said they took Deroche into custody for disorderly conduct. Once in custody, Deroche allegedly continued to yell and swear at police and banged his head and face against the partition in the police cruiser, causing himself a forehead laceration.

Deroche was transported to Rhode Island Hospital and was issued a release to appear in court on Aug. 21.
