Providence Paid Person of Interest in Cranston Shooting $18,000 to Settle Suit

General Jones, 27, a convicted drug dealer and the man wanted by Cranston Police as a person of interest in Tuesday's Reservoir Avenue shooting, was recently paid $18,000 by the City of Providence to settle a lawsuit that accused Providence officers of subjecting him to an illegal cavity search in 2009.

The Providence Journal reported last month that Jones, a convicted drug dealer who was sentenced to 15 years, 3 to serve for drug dealing and weapons possession in 2005, alleged two Providence police officers humiliated him and forced an illegal cavity search outside a Providence middle school as they demanded he give up information.

Jones claimed he was a passenger in a car that was stopped by officers. After a search of the car turned up nothing, Jones said he was driven to Esek Hopkins Middle School where the officer allegedly told him as he put on a rubber glove "I am going to give you a chance to give up somebody or I am going to go up there."
