Six Vying for Police Chief Job

None are from within the department.

A total of six candidates have applied for the job of Cranston police chief, the mayor's office confirmed Tuesday, and none are from within the department.

City officials have not released the names of any candidates, but Cranston Mayor Allan W. Fung, in a statement, said he is happy with the pool of candidates.

“The city has six applicants that responded to the advertisement for Cranston’s next police chief. I cannot identify individual applicants but I can tell you that I am pleased with the quality of those interested in the position," Fung said. "There is a diverse mix of in-state and out-of-state applicants."

The next step is setting up a panel to help interview applicants, Fung said. That panel will include law enforcement officials, Cranston residents and "representatives from the minority community," Fung said.

"It is critical that this selection process be as open and inclusive because our next chief has to be someone that understands Cranston and can lead the city into the future. We will take our time with this process because I want to pick the best person for the job,” Fung said.
