Two Hospitalized after Riverbend Apartment Fire

A fire that broke out in a second-floor apartment in building "J" at Riverbend Apartments this morning sent two people to the hospital for smoke inhalation, said Cranston Fire Chief William M. McKenna.

Flames broke out around 11 a.m. and firefighters knocked the fire in short order, but they worked for more than an hour to put out hotspots in the wall.

The fire started on the second floor and spread to the unit above it, McKenna said.

The extent of the injuries do not appear to be life threatening.

Multiple ladder trucks and engines responded and Dyer Avenue was closed for a time as hoses snaked from hydrants across the street down to the armada of fire apparatus assembled at the scene.

Damage appeared heavy.

The fire is still under investigation and few additional details are available.
