Council Members-Elect Outnumber Sitting Members at No-Quorum Meeting

The Public Works Committee meeting was cancelled Tuesday night due to a lack of quorum.

Newly elected (but not yet in power) members of the City Council outnumbered sitting members at Tuesday night’s Public Works Committee meeting.

In fact, there were just two members of the six-person committee in City Hall at the meeting’s 6 p.m. start time. Without a quorum, Councilman Richard D. Santamaria Jr., vice-chair of the committee, was forced to announce the meeting would not be held.

Santamaria and Councilman Anthony J. Lupino were the only two members to show up for the meeting and, according to Lupino, the only no-show to give notice that he wouldn’t be attending was Steve Stycos.

The others: Emilio Navarro, Lesile Ann Luciano, and Maria Bucci “should be ashamed of themselves," Lupino said.

Santamaria waited until about 6:15 p.m. before making the call to postpone the meeting. He said all matters before the committee would appear on the full City Council agenda at the end of the month.

Meanwhile Council Members-elect Don Botts, Michael Farina, Sarah Kales Lee and Mario Aceto hung out in the council chambers, apparently eager for their turn behind the Dias after inauguration.

With about 45 minutes to kill before the 7 p.m. start of the Safety Services and Licenses Committee meeting, a few people left City Hall to get a coffee. Others milled about and talked about whether the stipend local elected officials get should be cut if a council member misses a meeting.

Lupino, who did not run for reelection this year, made his thoughts clear.

“We should take the total stipend, divide it by the number of meetings and cut it if you don’t show up,” he said. “People are elected to serve the people.”

REALLY? Now, you are concerned about the stipend? Why when I mentioned it, no one remarked about it? We are PAYING these people our tax dollars to do a job! They chose to run, and if they lost, chances are it is because they are NOT doing a good job! Stipends should be given at the end of a term, if meetings are attended, constituent communication is sufficient and knowledge of city affairs is apparent. SHAME ON THEM for not coming, and SHAME on us for letting them get away with it!! Can this issue be revisited in the charter?

This nothing new though, is it? Look at the attendance records on this council. President Lupino is right - take their stipend. Better yet, going forward, any council person who behaves like this gets removed from office. You can't represent the people if you don't show up.

It's too bad.....really, But No Show Narvarro turned out to be one of the biggest frauds ever elected to Cranston City Council

The voters make the final decision as to whether a councilor is properly serving them. People expect their elected leaders to show up and do the job.

Chairman of the Dem Comm Michael Sepe, talk to you're council people. I am not surprised at the behavier of the Dem Council Members....If anyone was at the last Inaugural Cermonies or read about the actions of the Democrats on the Council, it was an embarresment to our City...Invited dignitaries left the stage. Not a good example for our young people...The next time I want to go and see grown men behave badly I will attend a Cranston City Council Meeting

It appears that the republican council member didn't show up either. No worry come January 2013 a new beginning with new council people, the voters made a HUGE statement November 6th,2012 in Cranston they replaced what they didn't like and didn't re-elect the ones that thought they were safe and didn't allow any of the "former" council people back! Good luck to all the new council members!

Appears a few of you have a vendetta against certain politicians. Maybe you need to look in your own "closet" "yard" "family" as there are 3 sides to the truth his hers TRUTH!!! We all know certain politicians needed to be removed and NOT re-elected nor brought back after being deceitiful to the people of their Ward...1 2 3 4 Bingo Cranston needed a new team in place not what they had! Hey they can't do any worse than what's been done to the residents! Taxes, political appointments, turncoats for sure...
