Fung Takes in $110,000 in Latest Quarter

The Cranston mayor isn't officially running for Governor, but he's raising money.

Cranston Mayor Allan W. Fung has raked in about $110,000 in campaign money, according to his chief of staff, Carlos Lopez.

Fung is expected to show a campaign war chest of more than $270,000 once the most-recent campaign finance report due July 31 is filed.

Although he hasn't officially declared his candidacy for Governor, state media outlets have practically assumed it's a given Fung will announce he'll seek the Republican nomination.

Fung likely won't announce anything until the fall, but in the meantime, his campaign has been actively raising money online, at small events and a major fundraiser at the Cranston Country Club.

If he runs, he'll be facing off against longtime friend and former high school chum Angel Taveras — now the mayor of Providence — and Gina Raimondo, the state's general treasurer. Both are Democrats and both have quite a bit more money, especially Raimondo, who had $1.7 million in her campaign account at the end of the last filing period. Taveras had nearly $600,000.
