Library Appoints new Youth Services Coordinator

Emily Brown, the city's new coordinator, has experience in both public schools and public libraries.

A librarian with a background in schools and children is joining Cranston Public Libraries as the organization's new Coordinator of Youth Services.

Emily Brown, who previously served as school librarian at Kizarian Elementary School in Providence and as a youth services librarian in Providence before that, brings a passion for working with children and teens to Cranston, said Library Director Edward Garcia.

"Emily comes to us with an impressive understanding of Youth Services librarianship particularly on how public and school libraries can interact and work together," Garcia said.

Emily graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a Master's degree in Library and Information Science in 2007 and with a Bachelor's of Arts in Journalism in 2005 from Ithaca College. She is a member of the Young Adult Library Services Association Great Graphic Novels for Teens selection committee since 2005 and reviews children's and young adult fiction for School Library Journal.

In her new role, Emily will manage all youth services operations for the Cranston Public Library system. She will oversee staff, programming, collection development and community partnerships for youth services at the central library and branch locations.
