"VOTER ID ensures that poll workers can validate the name that voters give them when they obtain their ballots at the polls, and this protects the rights of all Rhode Island voters,” said Mollis.

Rhode Island law now requires voters to show a proper photo ID in order to vote by regular ballot, however, if a registered voter does not possess a photo ID, they cannot be turned away at the polls. They have the right to a provisional ballot, and should be given one at their polling location.

Acceptable types of photo ID include:

- RI driver’s license
- U.S. Passport
- ID card issued by an U.S. educational institution
- U.S. military identification card
- State of RI or U.S. government-issued ID card
- Government-issued medical card
- RI Voter ID

For more information about voter ID, or other acceptable forms of ID, please call the Rhode Island Secretary of State’s Elections Division at (401) 222-2340 or visitwww.sos.ri.gov/elections/voterid/

The Secretary of State's Elections Division is located at 148 West River St., Providence, and is open to the public weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The Secretary of State's office prepares the ballots for all federal, state and municipal elections held in Rhode Island. In addition, the office maintains the statewide voter registration list, promotes voter registration and turnout and creates guides to running for office and voting.
