A Child's University Unveils New Digs

The more-than $1 million renovation includes biometric fingerprint systems, security cameras and new outdoor playgrounds, among other things.

A Child’s University, a nationally accredited early childhood school with two locations in Rhode Island, is celebrating its newly expanded and completely renovated Cranston location this month.

The schoo will now provide early childhood education services for children from infancy through kindergarten.

The $1,000,000-plus project includes state-of-the-art classrooms, security and camera systems including biometric fingerprint check-in systems, several new outdoor discovery playgrounds with NFL-like artificial turf, and a host of other bells and whistles.  The project was led by Lynsey Colgan, owner, and took over seven years to complete since she purchased the land on Park Avenue in 2005.

“There were certainly challenges, but our team of teachers were amazing through the entire conversion ... we all kept to the vision and saw it through to the end.  It was over seven long years in the making – but the final product made the entire journey more than worth it,” Lynsey said.

In addition to offering expanded programs for young children, Colgan said she is most satisfied with the level of quality now offered to her teaching team and to the children.  “This was a difficult lesson in persistence, but the thing that brings me the most satisfaction is knowing that the children and families we serve are now receiving the absolute highest level of quality imaginable.  From the indoor classroom environment right down to the bathroom facilities, this is first-class from start to finish and I couldn’t be happier to offer this to these young children.”

A Child’s University first made news ten years ago as the first child care center to provide parents with camera access to its facility.  This gave parents the unique ability to see their child at any time of day from any Internet connection – the ultimate “open door policy.”

When asked if this service was still available in the newly expanded facility, Colgan said, “yes, we still offer parents the option of seeing their child remotely whenever they want and have even expanded this feature to allow for parents to see from their iPhone, Droid, or iPad.  However, the rich classroom experience has really overshadowed this technology over the years and the camera system has become much more of a peripheral offering.  The true magic is in our teaching team, our high teacher-to-child ratios, and the rigorous national standards we follow in accordance with our national accreditation.”

The newly expanded Cranston facility will bring new teaching, administrative, and nursing jobs to the area as well as provide families with additional child care and early education options for infants all the way through to kindergarten.
