Emily Sulanowski of Cranston has won a $2,500 National Merit Scholarship.

She's also the valedictorian for the class of 2014 at Bay View Academy.

Of the 1.5 million students who enter the National Merit Scholarship Corporation each year, just 16,000 become semifinalists, and 15,000 become finalists. Of those, only 8,000 are picked for the prestigious scholarship.

Sulanowski plans to attend Rensselear Polytechnic Institute this fall.
