Cross Country Boys are Sportsmen of the Year

Members of the boys cross country team at Cranston High School West were awarded the Sportsmanship Award for the past season.

Congratulations are in order for the boys on the cross country team at Cranston High School West.

They took home the Sportsmanship Award from the Rhode Island Interscholastic League recently thanks to the way they carried themselves through the season.

"In the estimation of the coaches, our team, school and community [they] displayed those responsibilities associated with good sportsmanship," said Cranston High School West Principal Thomas Barbieri.

The school mission at West is "Give. Get. Respect." and the boys on the team displayed that mission well.

The team received the award by RIIL coaches at their annual all-division meeting, Barbieri said.

The Falcons finished the year with a stellar 10-2 record in the suburban league.

In the fall tournament, the team finished in eighth place — not the best showing, but consider this: from the first West runner to the last to cross the finish line, none was more than a minute-and-a-half apart. That means the group held together and ran as a team. This wasn't a team with one or two stars who stole the show. It was a team, from front to back.

That's true sportsmanship.
