Edgewood Eagles Cheerleaders Sweep Regionals, Heading to Disney

The girls made history this past weekend and now need the community's help to raise enough money to fly to Florida and compete in the Pop Warner National Cheerleading Competition early next month.

The girls of Edgewood Eagles Cheerleading made history this past weekend.

On Saturday, the swept the Regional Championships and all four teams placed, which gives them all an opportunity to compete at the Pop Warner National Cheerleading Competition held in Disney World in early December.

This is the first time in Rhode Island History that a Pop Warner Association has sent all four cheerleading levels; as well as, in the past decade at the regional level.  Cheer Coordinator and Varsity Coach, Lori Scichilone, states “it was an amazing day… the girls and coaching staff worked so hard for this and it paid off, I couldn’t be prouder.”

All four teams, consisting of Jr. Pee Wee (ages 8-10), Pee Wee (ages 10-12), Jr. Midget (ages 11-13 and Midget (ages 12-15) placed at the competition. Three of the teams captured the New England Regional Championship and one the runner up.  With each of these placements, they are now allowed to compete at the National level.

Their hard work paid off, but now they face the challenge of raising thousands of dollars to pay for their trip to compete in Florida. Eighty-one girls need to afford their ticket to the competition.

To help close the financial gap, the girls are looking for sponsors and donations as well as canning and selling calendars.

"Every bit helps," Scichilone.
