Suspicious Bottle with Liquid Briefly Evacuates Stone Hill Elementary

A teacher's discovery of a glass bottle containing liquid in a wooded area behind Stone Hill Elementary School led to the evacuation of the building for a brief period on Monday, school officials said.

Parents were notified of the evacuation in an e-mail from the school principal and the whole event was over within just a few minutes, said Ray Votto, the chief operating officer for Cranston Public Schools.

So far, the district hasn't gotten back test results from the Cranston Fire Department, but the bottle was taken away and children went back into the school after a brief building sweep by emergency responders.

The response was carried out of an abundance of caution, Votto said. A teacher found the bottle and told the principal, who called the fire department.

The glass bottle, discovered by the teacher in a wooded area that children have a tendency to hang out in, contained a clear liquid and "a battery was nearby," Votto said.
