VIDEO: Western Hills Teacher Surprised with Golden Apple Award

Michael Blackburn makes math interesting and exciting with innovative teaching methods.

Math Teacher Michael Blackburn was surprised by news crews and Education Commissioner Deborah Gist recently in the middle of one of his math classes.

Blackburn, who teaches seventh grade, was presented with a Golden Apple award for his excellent teaching methods and the students who he inspires and compels to excel.

Blackburn was nominated by his students, who wrote that "he deserves this more than any other teachers!" in their nomination paperwork.

In a Senate Resolution introduced by Sen. John J. Tassoni, Blackburn "has inspired his students to envision the possibilities, to have confidence in themselves and their abilities, and to have fun doing math, which is not an easy achievement."

The Golden Apple Award honors "those who believe in the true spirit of teaching by making classrooms a fun and safe place of learning."
