City Might Apply for $400,000 DEM Grant to Build Locker Rooms at Cranston Stadium

Cranston Stadium is known for hosting sporting events for schools around the state.

It's big, it has a high-quality synthetic turf playing field and the stadium is large enough to host big crowds for championship games, tournaments and more.

But the facility, tucked in the heart of the Stadium neighborhood a block off Park Avenue, has one glaring omission: locker rooms.

The City Council on Monday will consider a resolution that would enable the city to apply for a $400,000 grant to help the city design and build locker rooms at Cranston Stadium.

The measure has bipartisan support and is sponsored by Council President John E. Lanni Jr., Council Vice President Michael Farina and Councilmen Richard Santamaria Jr. and Michael Favicchio.

According to the resolution, "having full service locker rooms at the Cranston Stadium will enable the youth of the City to prepare for and clean up after games at the stadium" as well as "will enable the City to obtain better rents from groups that wish to use the Stadium."

The grant program is managed by the state Department of Environmental Management. The maximum request is $400,000 and grants come with a 50 percent matching fund requirement, which means the city will have to come up with $200,000 of its own based on a theoretical grant of $400,000, though the final amount could be lower.

The grants are intended to promote the development and renovation of outdoor recreation facilities.

The deadline for the grant application is Nov. 29.
