107th St. Mary's Feast Begins Tonight

The feast runs through Sunday. More than 40,000 visitors are expected.

It's a sign that summer is just about halfway over:

Come to 15 Phenix Avenue tonight through Sunday for food, carnival rides, sights, sounds and family fun.

Dozens of food vendors hawk classic Italian, Rhode Island and carnival cuisine. Others sell toys, tickets, tattoos and other services.

The event is capped off with a parade on Sunday at noon and fireworks that night.

“This is probably the biggest outdoor festival in the state,” Hank Squartino, owner of Society of San Gennaro and San Gennaro Feast, Inc.  “People wise. On Saturday and Sunday, you can’t move. They’re all over the place. It’s like flies.”

The St. Mary’s Feast Society is the largest unaffiliated Catholic society in Rhode Island and has about 600 members, one of whom is Rudy Giuliani. The society is a non-profit strictly religious organization and depends on fundraisers and contributions of its members to support the Feast.  The Feast has great historical significance and is a celebration of faith and devotion to the Madonna. The St. Mary’s Feast will continue through the weekend culminating on Sunday with an honorary mass, a parade, and a fireworks display.
